We install LiftMaster-compatible access control systems in Pasadena for $285 to $780, depending on the hardware you’re pairing and whether new wiring needs to be pulled. Most keypad and telephone-entry installs are done the same day we arrive. Call (626) 657-5425 and we’ll bring the right part on the first trip. You find out your access control failed the hard way: a keypad that won’t accept the code, a telephone entry box that rings and rings but never opens the gate, or a card reader that blinks red instead of green. Maybe a delivery driver called you standing at the keypad saying “nothing happens when I punch the buttons.” That’s the moment you need the part matched to your LiftMaster model, priced honestly, and installed before the next package shows up.
Which LiftMaster Models This Applies To
LiftMaster access control equipment splits into three families: the LiftMaster CAP series (CAPXL, CAPXLV, CAPXM), the LiftMaster LA500 and LA400 gate operator packages that run on MyQ, and the older Telephone Entry boxes (PPWR, TL1, TL-MAINT). The CAP series uses proprietary LiftMaster wiring harnesses and talks to the operator on a 3-wire RS-485 bus. The LA500 can accept a wired keypad or a wireless KPW250 keypad. The TL1 telephone entry box has a coax phone line input and a dry-contact relay output to the operator. If you’re swapping a burned-out keypad, do not assume any keypad will work: LiftMaster wired keypads use a 4-wire setup plus a separate tamper loop, and cheaper third-party keypads may fail to communicate at all. We carry the OEM LiftMaster parts plus a few proven aftermarket boards that we’ve installed without callbacks in Pasadena’s older gate enclosures. One compatibility gotcha we see constantly here: older Pasadena homes built in the 1920s and 1930s near Bungalow Heaven still have pre-WWII gate wiring, and some of that wire is aluminum branch circuit, not copper. A new LiftMaster CAPXM board expects clean copper, not corroded aluminum. We check the wire before we quote the board, because a board swap on aluminum wire that we don’t inspect first becomes a callback nobody wants.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your LiftMaster Access Control Installation Is Failing
- Keypad accepts the code but the gate doesn’t move. Usually a dead relay in the keypad board or a snapped connection from the keypad to the operator’s “open” input. The keypad’s display confirms the code is right; the operator confirms nobody’s pushing its button.
- Telephone entry rings the house but won’t release the gate. This is the classic LiftMaster TL1 failure: the relay in the telephone entry box welds open. The phone path works fine, the relay that fires the operator does not.
- The keypad’s backlight flickers or dies entirely at night. That’s a failing step-down transformer in the keypad housing. It still stores the code in memory, but the membrane key lights go dark, so you can’t see buttons after sundown.
- The operator recognizes the keypad intermittently. A loose data wire, a failing RS-485 transceiver, or rodent damage where the wire passes through the gate post. We’ve pulled dead rats out of more Pasadena gate posts than we care to count.
- You get an “access denied” even with your own master code. The access controller’s memory chip has degraded, or someone’s entered so many wrong codes that the lockout function kicked in and stays engaged after a power toggle.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In Pasadena, a LiftMaster access control replacement runs between $285 and $780 installed. The hardware itself is $120 to $450 depending on whether you need a simple wired keypad, a wireless keypad, a whole CAPXLV board, or a new TL1 telephone entry unit. Labor is typically 1.5 to 2.5 hours at our standard Pasadena rate, and that includes pulling the old unit, splicing the wiring back correctly, testing the operator’s open and safety-stop inputs, and walking you through the programming. You get the written price before we start, and the labor is guaranteed under the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the new part fails within a year, the return visit is free. No surprise line items, ever.

AfterDIY or Call Us?
You can safely check two things before calling us. First, confirm the keypad’s display still lights up. If it’s dead, it’s either the transformer or the board, and you’re replacing it either way. Second, check that no debris is blocking the gate path, because a stuck-open safety loop can fool the access control into refusing commands. What you should not do is wire a new LiftMaster CAP series board into an old aluminum branch circuit yourself, or open a live 120V operator box without cutting the breaker. Those boxes carry line voltage and the capacitors can hold a charge for hours. That’s a job for a licensed tech with a meter and the right PPE. We also see people fry perfectly good replacement boards by swapping the 24V and the common lines. A $450 board becomes a paperweight in half a second. If any of this makes you pause, call (626) 657-5425 and we’ll sort it.
FAQs
Five to eight years in Pasadena’s dry heat, though units mounted on unshaded south-facing pedestals near Eaton Canyon or Altadena can bake out faster and lose memory chips at the four-year mark. We see the same failure pattern every August.
Sometimes, yes. If the failure is a single worn membrane switch or a corroded terminal block, we can clean and reseal it for under $150. If the relay or the logic board is dead, replacement is cheaper than board-level repair. Call (626) 657-5425 with the symptom and we’ll tell you which one you’re looking at.
Most keypad and telephone entry installs take 90 minutes to two hours on site. We quote the time after we see your existing wiring, and we don’t leave until you’ve tested the new code yourself.
We keep the CAPXLV, CAPXM, KPW250 wireless keypads, and TL1 telephone entry boards in our Pasadena trucks. We also carry Mighty Mule, Ghost Controls, and DoorKing parts for older gates. If your specific LiftMaster board isn’t on the truck, we can usually have it within one business day.
