If your BFT keypad, card reader, or telephone entry system has stopped talking to your gate, the fix usually comes down to the access control board, the radio receiver, or the wiring between them. At Warden Gate Repair Pasadena, we stock BFT-compatible access control components on the truck and install them across Pasadena for $340 to $890 depending on the unit and what’s already in the ground. Most Pasadena homeowners discover the failure the hard way: the keypad beeps but the gate won’t move, or a card that worked yesterday suddenly does nothing, or the intercom rings the house but nobody can hear you talk back.
We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with BFT, but we’ve been factory-trained on their equipment and install their access control parts every week. When you call, we’ll tell you which part you’re actually dealing with before we quote a dollar figure.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
BFT has sold a few distinct access control lines over the years, and the part you need depends on which one is wired into your gate. The older Rigel series and Deimos series use a separate decoder board that mounts inside the gate operator cabinet. The newer BFT Ultra and BFT Phobos models integrate access control directly into the control board, which means the diagnosis is different. If you have a stand-alone BFT keypad mounted on a pedestal or pillar, that’s usually a BFT MITTO or BFT Kustos unit, and it runs on its own receiver independent of the gate motor.
The compatibility gotcha we see most often: a BFT remote receiver that works on 433 MHz won’t talk to a keypad transmitting on 868 MHz. Pasadena homes built before 2010 frequently have the older 433 MHz Receivers, and when one part gets swapped without checking the frequency, nothing pairs. Before you buy anything, look for the model sticker on the underside of the unit or inside the operator cover. If the sticker’s gone, we can identify it by the connector pattern.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for BFT access control, we recommend OEM boards and receivers. The aftermarket equivalents we’ve tested don’t hold up to direct sun on a Pasadena summer afternoon, and the failure rate isn’t worth the $60 you’ll save. For antennas and keypads, quality aftermarket is fine.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your BFT Access Control Installation Is Failing
- Keypad beeps but the gate doesn’t move. The keypad itself is working, but the relay or decoder board isn’t sending the signal to the motor. This is the most common failure we see in Pasadena, and it’s usually the access control board, not the motor.
- Cards work intermittently. If a proximity card reads fine in the morning and fails in the afternoon, the antenna loop in the reader is degrading. Heat makes it worse. We see this a lot on west-facing walls along Colorado Boulevard in the summer.
- Intercom rings the house but audio is dead. The power supply to the intercom module is failing, or the wiring between the pedestal and the house has corroded. Pasadena’s older neighborhoods with original conduit often have moisture intrusion at the pedestal base.
- Gate opens on its own or won’t latch closed. This one is serious. A failing access control relay can send phantom open signals. It’s not the wind, and it’s not a ghost. If your gate has ever opened by itself, call us before it happens at 2 a.m.
- Two different remotes work, but the keypad died completely. That points to the keypad’s own board or its wiring home-run, not the gate operator. The fix is usually confined to the pedestal, which keeps the repair simpler and cheaper.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For BFT access control installation in Pasadena, you’re looking at these ranges:
- Keypad replacement (MITTO, Kustos): $340 to $520 installed
- Card reader or proximity reader: $380 to $560 installed
- Decoder board or access control module: $410 to $680 installed
- Full access control system with keypad + intercom: $720 to $890 installed
The range comes down to how much existing wiring we can reuse and whether the old unit’s footprint matches the new one. If we need to run new low-voltage wire from the pedestal to the operator, that adds labor. Every quote includes the part, the labor, and the programming, in writing, before we start. You’ll know the number before we touch a screwdriver. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not right, we come back and fix it free.
And a note on how we work in Pasadena: before your technician arrives, you get their name and photo by text. At the door, they show a photo ID badge. Every tech who works on your gate has passed a background check and identity verification. That’s our Threshold Standard, and we don’t skip it for anyone.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself. Confirm the keypad has power by looking for the backlight or a beep. Check that the breakers for both the gate operator and the pedestal are on. Make sure nobody recently changed your Wi-Fi password, because newer BFT units with app-based entry rely on that connection.
Past that, we recommend a trained professional. These units tie into your gate’s control board, and a wrong wire landed in the wrong terminal can take out both the keypad and the operator motor. That turns a $400 job into a $900 job fast. If you’re in Pasadena and you suspect the access control is the problem, call us at (626) 657-5425. Tell me what it’s doing wrong, and I’ll tell you exactly what it costs to fix it, before I touch a thing.
FAQs
Eight to twelve years is typical, though units mounted in direct afternoon sun on south and west-facing walls tend to fail at the seven-year mark. Heat degrades the capacitors on the board. If your unit is nearing that age and acting irregular, replacing it before it dies completely saves you the cost of an after-hours call.
Sometimes. If the issue is a bad relay or a loose terminal, we can often repair the board on site for under $200. If the board has visible heat damage or corrosion, replacement is the honest answer. We’ll show you exactly what we’re looking at before you decide. Call (626) 657-5425 and we’ll give you a straight answer.
Most single-unit replacements take 90 minutes to two hours from arrival to programming and testing. Full system installs with a new pedestal and intercom can take half a day. We’ll confirm the timeframe when we quote the job.
We keep the most common BFT decoders, receivers, MITTO keypads, and proximity readers on the truck at all times. For less common models, we can have the correct part in hand within one to two business days. We also stock compatible parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls systems if your gate mixes brands.
