DoorKing gate frames, hinge plates, and operator mounting brackets in Pasadena typically cost $280 – $650 to weld, fabricate, and install, depending on the part and how much of the original steel is still sound. We stock common DoorKing-compatible steel stock and can usually complete fabrication and installation the same week the failure is diagnosed, often same-day for hinge and bracket repairs. Most owners find out a weld has failed when the gate starts dragging, sagging, or making a grinding sound it never made before. That’s the moment the part stopped doing its job and started stressing every other component around it.
We’re an independent gate repair company, not affiliated with DoorKing, but DoorKing equipment is one of the nine brands we service daily. Here’s what you need to know before you spend a dollar.
Which DoorKing Models This Applies To
DoorKing has been building slide and swing gate operators since the late 1980s, and their steel hardware is generally thicker than what you find on residential-only brands. The welding and fabrication work we do covers three categories of DoorKing hardware:
- Gate frame and panel steel on DoorKing slide gates (models like the 1601, 1602, and 4300 series operators) and swing gates paired with DoorKing 6002, 6003, 6100, and 9150 operators.
- Operator mounting plates and pedestal brackets that hold the motor and chain assembly in place, especially on the heavy slide-gate family.
- Hinge plates and weld-on gate hinges on swing installations. These take the full weight of a moving gate leaf and are the single most common welding failure we see in Pasadena.
The key DoorKing gotcha: many of the older DoorKing gates in Pasadena were installed in the 1990s and early 2000s using painted mild steel, not galvanized. That means when the paint eventually cracks along a weld seam, moisture gets in and the rust starts from the inside out. If your gate has that orange-brown dust at the base of the hinge or bracket, the metal likely needs cleaning, cutting back to solid steel, and a fresh plate welded in, not just a surface patch.
Finding the right replacement part starts with the operator model number. On DoorKing operators it’s printed on a metal data plate on the side or inside the control box. The gate hardware itself won’t have a model number, so we measure hinge thickness, plate dimensions, and the distance between bolt holes to match the part. A measurement that’s off by a quarter inch means a bracket that doesn’t line up, and that’s a wasted trip for everyone.

Signs Your DoorKing Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate sags on the latch side. This is almost always a hinge plate that’s broken or pulling away from the post. The weld cracks first, then the plate bends, and the gate slowly drops until it’s scraping the ground or won’t close fully.
- You hear a creak or groan when the gate moves. A healthy weld is silent. If the hinge or bracket is moving against broken steel, the friction creates that low creak, and it will only get worse as the gap widens.
- The operator is working but the gate moves slower than it used to. When a slide gate’s steel track bracket shifts or a wheel mount weld begins to fail, the motor is fighting more resistance. You’ll notice the gate taking longer to cycle or the motor housing getting warmer than normal.
- Visible rust trails or flaking paint at the welds. In Pasadena’s dry climate, surface rust is less common than it is near the coast, but when it appears at a weld seam it’s a sign water has been sitting in a crack for months. The steel under the paint is compromised.
- The gate wobbles or shifts side to side when you push it by hand. That’s a hinge or bracket that’s no longer rigidly attached. The part hasn’t completely failed yet, but it’s close enough that the next big gust of Santa Ana wind could finish the job.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what we charge for DoorKing welding and fabrication work in Pasadena, quoted as installed pricing:
- Hinge replacement (one pair, welded): $280 – $420
- Hinge plate repair or reinforcement (per hinge): $180 – $300
- Operator bracket or mounting plate fabrication and install: $320 – $550
- Gate frame crack repair and reinforcement (per section): $250 – $450
- Custom steel plate or gusset fabrication: $120 – $280 per piece
The range depends on two things: how much of the existing steel needs to be cut away before we can weld in fresh material, and whether the gate needs to be lifted off its hinges to do the work safely. If the operator has to be temporarily removed to access the bracket, that adds time. What’s included in every quote: the steel stock, the welding gas and rod, surface prep, and the labor to install and test the gate’s full travel.
You’ll have a written price before we touch the gate. Not an estimate that changes at the end. A number you agreed to in advance. The work itself carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the weld fails or the part doesn’t hold, we come back and make it right at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
There are two things an owner can check safely: whether a bolt is loose and whether a hinge plate has an obvious crack. Tightening a loose bolt is fine. That’s where the DIY ends.
Welding on a gate that’s under no load sounds simple until you realize the gate needs to be braced or removed to relieve tension, the area needs to be ground clean for a proper bead, and a bad weld on a moving hinge creates two new failure points in the places the repair was supposed to fix. A gate leaf on a DoorKing swing system can weigh 300 pounds or more. If a repair fails while someone is under or near the gate, that’s a hospital trip. We don’t recommend it. Steel fabrication on a gate is one of the few things in home repair where the risk of doing it wrong outweighs the cost of doing it right.

FAQs
A properly welded hinge plate on a DoorKing gate in Pasadena typically lasts 8 – 12 years, often longer than the original weld because modern MIG welding with proper surface prep is stronger than the factory spot welds on older gates.
Yes, we can repair a cracked weld if the surrounding steel is still sound. If the metal around the weld is rusted or fatigued, we’ll cut it back to solid steel and fabricate a new plate that overlaps the damage for strength.
Most hinge and bracket repairs are completed in 1 – 2 hours on site, including lifting the gate, welding, cooling, and testing the full travel before we leave. Larger fabrication jobs may require a return visit once the steel section is built in our shop.
We keep common DoorKing-compatible hinge plates, bracket stock, and steel bar on the service vehicle, plus the welding gear to fabricate on site. Specialty pieces are cut and welded in our shop, usually within one business day.
If the part is covered under a DoorKing manufacturer warranty, we’ll recommend you pursue that first for replacement hardware. For the labor and any fabrication work, we’re happy to handle the installation regardless of where the part comes from. We also service LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls gates, so if you have more than one gate on the property, we can look at everything in one visit.
